Strategic Education Inc. (SEI, STRA) is an American education services holding company that owns and operates higher education institutions and education-technology businesses for primarily working-adult learners. Strategic Education Inc. was created on August 1, 2018, through the all-stock merger of Strayer Education, Inc. and Capella Education Company; the combined company retained both flagship universities as independent, separately accredited institutions and adopted the new corporate name Strategic Education, Inc.[1][2]

Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, Strategic Education Inc. operates across three reporting segments: U.S. Higher Education (Strayer University, Capella University and related units), Australia/New Zealand (Torrens University Australia, Think Education, and Media Design School), and Education Technology Services (Sophia Learning, Workforce Edge, and employer partnerships).[3] In 2020, the company expanded internationally by acquiring Laureate Education’s Australia and New Zealand operations—Torrens University Australia, Think Education, and Media Design School—for approximately US$642.7 million, with the transaction closing on November 5, 2020.[4][5]

SEI’s portfolio integrates accredited degree programs (associate through doctoral), micro-credentials and certificates, a large-scale general-education course subscription (Sophia Learning), and a tuition benefits and education-benefits management platform (Workforce Edge) used by large employers. History

Roots in Strayer and Capella (pre-2018)

The lineage of Strategic Education Inc. traces to two established U.S. for-profit higher education systems that operated independently for decades: Strayer Education, Inc., parent of Strayer University, and Capella Education Company, parent of Capella University.[9] Strayer University evolved from a business college founded in Washington, D.C., in 1892, while Capella University originated in Minneapolis in the 1990s as an online institution focused on working adults. Prior to the merger, both organizations shifted heavily to online delivery and built employer-aligned offerings.

2017 announcement and 2018 merger of equals

In October 2017, Strayer Education and Capella Education agreed to combine in an all-stock “merger of equals.” Shareholders of Strayer and Capella approved the transaction in January 2018; on August 1, 2018, the transaction closed and the combined entity was renamed Strategic Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: STRA).[10][11][12] The combined company kept both universities as “independent and separately accredited institutions” and set its corporate headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, while maintaining a significant presence in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[13][14]

2020 international expansion: Australia and New Zealand

On July 29, 2020, SEI announced an agreement to acquire Laureate Education’s Australia and New Zealand operations—Torrens University Australia, Think Education, and Media Design School—for approximately US$642.7 million in cash. The deal closed on November 5, 2020. Torrens University is registered by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) as an “Australian University,” and Media Design School is an NZQA Category 1 provider.[15][16][17][18]

2024–2025: Segment growth and employer partnerships

In 2024, SEI reported approximately US$1.22 billion in revenue and emphasized growth across its segments, including rising subscriptions at Sophia Learning and increased employer-affiliated enrollment in U.S. Higher Education (USHE).[19][20] In 2025, Strategic Education Inc. highlighted continued momentum in Education Technology Services (ETS) and its Workforce Edge employer-benefits platform, including a new partnership to administer Best Buy’s expanded employee education benefits program, which leverages Strayer University’s Degrees@Work.[21][22]

Corporate structure and leadership

SEI is incorporated in the United States and headquartered in Herndon, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.). As of 2025, Robert S. Silberman serves as Chairman of the Board and Karl McDonnell serves as President and Chief Executive Officer. The company’s independent board includes directors with higher education, corporate, legal, and technology experience.[23][24][25] The company highlights corporate governance policies, a Code of Business Conduct, human rights commitments, and ethics hotline access in its public corporate responsibility disclosures.[26][27][28]

Business segments and operations

U.S. Higher Education (USHE)

SEI’s U.S. Higher Education segment consists primarily of Strayer University and Capella University. Both universities are online-first institutions that also operate selected physical campus or student support locations. The segment targets working adult learners seeking career-relevant degrees and certificates in fields such as business, IT, health professions, public service, and education.[29]

Strayer University is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).[30][31] Strayer offers undergraduate and graduate degrees along with the Jack Welch Management Institute (JWMI) MBA and executive certificates. JWMI’s online MBA has been ranked in the top 10 by The Princeton Review and recognized by Poets&Quants in recent lists.[32][33][34]

Capella University is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and offers two primary learning modalities: the traditional, faculty-paced GuidedPath and the self-paced, subscription-based FlexPath that allows students to complete courses at their own speed within a term.[35][36] Capella lists various specialized accreditations (e.g., CCNE for nursing; COAMFTE for MFT; and APA for the MS in Clinical Psychology clinical counseling specialization) on its accreditation pages.[37]

Within USHE, SEI reports employer-affiliated enrollment as a growing portion of total enrollment, reflecting its corporate partnerships strategy (see below).[38]

Australia/New Zealand (ANZ) segment

SEI’s ANZ segment comprises Torrens University Australia, Think Education, and Media Design School. Torrens is registered by TEQSA as an “Australian University” with self-accrediting authority and a CRICOS registration for international students; Think Education is a registered Australian higher education provider and maintains vocational registrations (ASQA Registered Training Organisation). Media Design School in New Zealand is NZQA Category 1, indicating “highly confident” quality ratings.[39][40][41][42] Torrens and its sister institutions expand SEI’s footprint outside North America and diversify subject offerings across business, design and creative technology, hospitality, health, and education.[43]

Education Technology Services (ETS)

SEI’s ETS segment includes two primary platforms that support affordability and employer alignment:

Sophia Learning — a subscription service offering ACE-recommended, online general-education courses intended for transfer to partner institutions (and widely reviewed by other institutions). Sophia promotes low-cost, self-paced courses with a monthly subscription model, and maintains formal partnerships with numerous colleges and universities, including affiliations with both Strayer and Capella.[44][45][46][47][48]

Workforce Edge — SEI’s tuition-benefits and education-benefits management platform for employers. Workforce Edge centralizes tuition assistance, connects employees to programs across SEI universities and other providers, and provides analytics to HR teams. In 2025, Workforce Edge announced a partnership to administer Best Buy’s expanded “no-debt, no-cost” degree pathways using Strayer’s Degrees@Work options.[49][50][51][52]

Brands and offerings

Strayer University and JWMI

Strayer offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in business, IT, accounting, criminal justice and public administration, as well as micro-credentials. The Jack Welch Management Institute (JWMI) at Strayer University delivers an online MBA and executive certificates focused on practical leadership. JWMI’s program has been ranked among the top online MBAs by The Princeton Review and Poets&Quants.[53][54][55]

Capella University (GuidedPath and FlexPath)

Capella University offers competency-based and course-based programs. The FlexPath option uses a flat-rate, subscription-style tuition per 12-week billing session, enabling students to move quickly through assessments and complete as many courses as they can demonstrate mastery for during the term. Capella lists specialized accreditations on its website and maintains HLC institutional accreditation.[56][57]

Torrens University Australia, Think Education, Media Design School

Torrens University Australia (with campuses in multiple Australian cities and extensive online delivery) offers programs across business, design and creative technology (including through Billy Blue College of Design), health, hospitality, education, and project management. Think Education and Media Design School supplement the portfolio with vocational and creative-tech pathways in Australia and New Zealand. These providers are regulated by TEQSA (higher education) and ASQA (vocational) in Australia, and NZQA in New Zealand, respectively.[58][59][60]

Sophia Learning

Sophia Learning functions as a low-cost, subscription-based general-education course provider. Courses are ACE-recommended for credit and can transfer into degree programs at partner institutions; Sophia also integrates with Strayer and Capella pathways, including “no-cost gen ed” initiatives for eligible bachelor’s students at the universities.[61][62][63][64]

Workforce Edge (education-benefits management)

Workforce Edge provides a centralized portal for employees to discover eligible programs, apply tuition benefits, and track reimbursement under employer education policies. Employers use Workforce Edge to administer benefits, align learning to skill needs, and evaluate ROI. The platform supports SEI institutions and includes a broader network of education providers.[65][66][67]

Academic model and student profile

Strategic Education Inc. markets to “nontraditional” learners—working adults, first-generation learners, career-changers, and international students—who value online flexibility and employer-aligned programs. Across its universities, SEI emphasizes:

Competency-based and paced options: Capella’s FlexPath enables self-paced progress within billing sessions; GuidedPath provides traditional pacing. Strayer’s quarter-based course structure supports working schedules, while JWMI focuses on executive-style, practical leadership pedagogy.[68][69]

Affordability and transfer pathways: Sophia Learning offers a low monthly subscription for general-education courses designed to transfer, which SEI leverages to lower the time and cost to degree.[70][71]

Employer alignment: Workforce Edge, Degrees@Work (Strayer), and curated academic offerings target in-demand skills and tuition-benefit structures. SEI regularly reports the share of “employer-affiliated enrollment” within USHE as a performance indicator.[72]

Employer partnerships and Workforce Edge

SEI collaborates with employers through direct tuition partnerships and the Workforce Edge platform. Such partnerships can include tuition discounts, curated pathways tied to job roles, and tuition-assistance program management. In 2025, Workforce Edge announced a partnership with Best Buy to administer expanded education benefits, citing integration with Strayer University’s Degrees@Work offerings. SEI has also reported growth in the number of Workforce Edge corporate agreements and in the total number of employees at participating companies.[73][74]

The universities under Strategic Education Inc. maintain accreditation with recognized quality-assurance bodies in their jurisdictions:

Strayer University: Institutional accreditation by MSCHE (U.S.).[75][76]

Capella University: Institutional accreditation by HLC (U.S.) with various specialized accreditations (e.g., CCNE for nursing; COAMFTE; APA for MS in Clinical Psychology clinical counseling specialization).[77]

JWMI’s online MBA has been ranked among the top programs by The Princeton Review; Capella highlights specialized accreditations for health, counseling, and marriage & family therapy programs; and Media Design School holds top NZQA quality ratings and an international reputation in creative technology education.[88][89][90]

Regulatory context

As a multi-jurisdiction operator, Strategic Education Inc. must comply with U.S. Department of Education rules and state-authorization regimes for its U.S. institutions, and with TEQSA/ASQA (Australia) and NZQA (New Zealand) frameworks for its ANZ institutions. Torrens University’s TEQSA record evidences “Australian University” registration with self-accrediting authority; Media Design School maintains NZQA Category 1 status; and Think Education maintains relevant provider registrations.[91][92][93]

Like many for-profit education operators, SEI’s universities have occasionally drawn scrutiny regarding marketing, program cost and time-to-degree transparency, or program outcomes. In 2022, Capella University resolved a lawsuit involving doctoral students who alleged misrepresentations regarding program timelines and costs; the settlement did not include an admission of liability but prompted media coverage and institutional statements about student guidance and program clarity. Corporate responsibility
