Roovet Articles:Rights
Rights & Licensing
How content on Roovet Articles may be used and re-used, what contributors agree to when they edit, how images/media are handled, and how to report a rights concern. This is community information, not legal advice.
TL;DR
- Text on Roovet Articles is licensed for re-use under the site’s default license (see below).
- By contributing, you license your edits under that license and only upload content you have the right to share.
- Images/media must carry a clear license and source. Minimal fair use is allowed only with a proper rationale.
- Trademarks remain protected.
- For takedowns or rights concerns, see Takedown requests.
1) What this page covers
This page explains how content on Roovet Articles may be used and re-used, what rights contributors grant when they edit, how we handle images/media, and how to report a rights issue. It is general information and community policy; it is not legal advice.
2) Default license for text
Unless stated otherwise, all original text contributions on Roovet Articles are released under the site’s default license:
- Recommended default (example): Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) — allows copying, remixing, and commercial use with attribution and share-alike.
- License text: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
- Attribution guidance: see How to attribute.
If your installation sets a different default (via
$wgRightsText/$wgRightsUrl), that license governs.
A page may specify a different license only if clearly marked and compatible with site policies.
- License your contribution under the default license above (or the page-specific license if clearly indicated), and
- Warrant that you have the rights to do so (your own original work, public domain, or appropriately licensed material).
3) Images, media, and non-text files
You may upload or embed only media you have the right to use. Each file must include:
- A clear license (e.g., CC BY 4.0, CC BY-SA 4.0, CC0/public domain) or a valid fair-use rationale.
- The source (URL, author/creator, or “own work”).
- Any required attribution details.
Acceptable licensing for media
- Free licenses (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0/Public Domain) — preferred.
- Own work — state “own work,” add your chosen free license.
- Public domain — provide proof (government work, expired copyright, PD dedication, etc.).
- Fair use (non-free) — minimal use only where no free equivalent is available and the use is context-dependent (e.g., company logo in its article). Must include a specific fair-use rationale.
Minimal fair-use rationale (example)
== Fair-use rationale == * Purpose of use: Identify the subject in the related article. * Portion used: Low-resolution copy; no suitable free alternative exists. * Effect on market: Use is transformative and does not substitute for the original. * Article: [[Article Title]]
4) Trademarks
“Roovet,” “Roovet Articles,” associated logos, and other brand assets are protected by trademark law. The Creative Commons license for text and media does not grant any rights to use Roovet trademarks. Third-party marks appearing on the site remain the property of their respective owners.

When re-using Roovet Articles text under CC BY-SA 4.0 (or the site default license), provide:
- The title of the page and a link to it,
- Credit to “Roovet Articles contributors,”
- A note of the license (with link), and

6) External content and links
Pages may link to third-party sites. Roovet Articles is not responsible for external content. Embedded content (e.g., videos, maps) is subject to the third-party provider’s terms and may carry additional rights restrictions.
7) User-generated content
Editors are responsible for ensuring they have the right to post material they contribute and for providing accurate license/source information. Do not upload content obtained from the web unless its license explicitly allows re-use under the site’s terms.
8) Respect for living people and privacy
For biographies of living persons and sensitive topics, exercise increased care. Avoid publishing non-free images if a suitable free alternative exists. Do not publish private or personally identifying information without clear, verifiable consent and reliable sourcing.
