Tribal Brown (also known as Tribal Young Brown or simply Brown) is an American hip hop artist, record producer, and writer. He is the creative music identity of Tony James Nelson II and the founder of the independent label Roovet Records, based in Jacksonville, Florida.[1]
As a recording artist, Brown became known through early singles such as “Consider This” (2022), “End Game” (2022), and “Ah Yeah” (2023),[2][3][4] followed by the studio album Red Rose (2025).[5]
Beyond music, the name Tribal Brown is also associated with Nelson's dark fantasy fiction work, including the novel Tribal: Bloody Beginnings, which serves as the foundation of the broader Tribal fictional universe. He is based in Jacksonville, Florida, and is originally from Amityville, New York.[6]
Early life
Tribal Brown was born Tony James Nelson II on April 13, 1987, in East Meadow, New York, and grew up on Long Island, notably in Amityville.[7] He later relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where he launched his music career, developed Roovet Records, and expanded his creative work into fiction and fantasy worldbuilding.[8]
Career
Music
Brown began releasing music publicly in 2022 with the single “Consider This,” followed by “Hit Me on IG (feat. GK Dexter),” “Enemies (feat. Real Litty),” and “End Game.”[9][10][11][12]
His 2023 run included “You Could Be the One,” “Tribe Queen,” and “Ah Yeah,” which received write-ups on music blogs and magazines.[13][14][15][16]
In 2025 he released his debut studio album, Red Rose, featuring “In Da Club (feat. DJ J.O & Dopeboy Cot)” and collaborations with Melz Cali.[17][18] Additional 2025 singles include “Godieology (feat. Melz Cali)” and “Club Flow.”[19][20] He also appeared on Melz Cali’s “6 AM in London (feat. Tribal Young Brown).”[21]
Writing and the Tribal universe
Under the pen name Tribal Brown, Nelson expanded his creative work into dark fantasy fiction. He developed the Tribal universe, a mythic setting centered on power, bloodline, survival, sacred texts, and ritual violence. Its foundational novel is Tribal: Bloody Beginnings, which introduces characters such as Thirty-Two, Rimitorry, The Dark Alpha, and Utrea, along with major concepts including Ka'ru, the Tribal Bible, Deathwave, Nebu, and Gia.
This use of the name Tribal Brown broadens the persona beyond music and links it to fiction, worldbuilding, and the related creative brand of Tribal Comics.
Artistry
Brown’s music blends trap-leaning beats with confessional and confrontational writing. He has cited classic hip-hop influences and Jacksonville as a base for his creative work.[22]
As a broader creative identity, Tribal Brown also represents a shift into fictional mythmaking. The writing side of the persona is associated with dark fantasy, tribal empire lore, sacred power systems, fractured bloodlines, and character-driven mythology.
