History
In October 2012, Avon HMO obtained its license to operate as a national HMO from the regulatory authority, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The company however commenced operations in 2013 and has grown into one of the leading health maintenance organisations in Nigeria.
In 2014, Avon HMO launched its corporate health plans to meet diverse needs of the Nigerian Business World.
In 2016, Avon HMO became the first HMO in Nigeria to launch retail health plans and online subscriptions to health plans via its website on mobile devices.
In 2017, Avon HMO launched a health advocacy program on radio called ‘Practical Tips for Healthy Living’ on Smooth 98.1 FM in Lagos, Nigeria. The show focused on demystifying healthcare by offered practical tips to help Nigerians make healthier lifestyle choices.
In 2018, Avon HMO partnered with Piggyvest to enable Nigerians to make instalment payments for their health plans.

Community and Charitable Initiatives
The Idemili Initiative
In 2014, Avon HMO, in partnership with Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) rolled out a community-based health insurance scheme for communities in Idemili LGA of Anambra State.
The initiative was designated at Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital, Ogidi, a hospital recently refurbished by SNEPCo in 2014.
The Purple Lips Initiative
In October 2019, Avon HMO partnered with Sanitary Aid Initiative to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child. This was done by donating free sanitary products to disadvantaged girls in Unity High School, Oshodi and Gaskia College, Ijora Badia, Lagos. This was done to improve personal hygiene, gender parity in schools and ensure that girls had unimpeded access to education.
This was a culmination of the organization's #PurpleLipsChallenge done in celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month in March 2019. During the challenge women were encouraged to post pictures of themselves wearing purple lipstick. In return, the company pledged to empower a schoolgirl with reusable sanitary products for every photo posted.
Supporting healthcare entrepreneurs
With its Chairperson, Dr Awele Elumelu, also doubling as a Founding Trustee of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Avon HMO actively contributes to the organization's drive to empower young entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries with business management training, mentorship, coaching, funding and access to markets and key networks.
