Avela Ruun is a fictional surgical apprentice in Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha. She becomes one of Doctor Polezah's two principal assistants, alongside Deyr Koss. Her work concerns the physical repair of bodies rather than directly commanding a wound to close through magic.[1]

Background and appearance

Avela is nineteen when introduced, with a narrow face, black hair shaved above one ear and three inked lines around each wrist. She begins work in the eastern tower carrying water after the rebellion, then learns to stitch wounds. Her questions attract attention in a medical environment that often treats conventional limits as obstacles.[1]

Training

Polezah trains Avela and Deyr together through repeated procedures on a restrained living prisoner. Avela initially closes an artery in a way that causes a dangerous clot. Polezah reopens it and requires her to repair the vessel without crushing its walls. The scene shows technical precision developing inside a coercive and brutal system.[1]

Avela learns to guide flesh with pressure, steel and thread. Deyr develops the stone, iron and tank mechanisms that guide a patient's own Ka’ru. The text explicitly distinguishes their work from the ability to order a wound closed.[1]

Continuing work

The Queen's Wolves call the two assistants the Doctor's Fingers. They later help attend the winners of the Nebu Calling. Avela's name is distinct from Maela Ruun's; sharing part of a name does not establish a family relationship between them.[1]
