Nebu (deity)
Nebu is a fictional deity in the Tribal Universe and one of the twelve living gods on Murder Island. He is distinct from the tribe that uses his name. In Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha, the encounter with him reveals that the names used by the tribes also belong to beings still present on the island.[1]
Encounter with Eshari's family
Nebu appears after Eshari, Knargz, Zuberi, Makhera and the arriving Dark One and Utrea fight a group of Chamber survivors. He takes the appearance of a young man in white clothing. Reflections, shadows and physical details do not consistently agree, and Eshari notices the contradictions. His presentation makes deception part of the encounter rather than merely a reputation reported by someone else.[1]
He heals the living and temporarily restores the four dead attackers, then ends their renewed lives. This demonstration differs from an ordinary healer repairing a wound. It also does not establish that every person killed in the series returns permanently.[1]
Gifts and continuing role
Nebu provides dampeners for Knargz, Zuberi and Makhera. The devices help contain and regulate their Ka’ru. The gift contributes to the distinction between the power a survivor possesses and the amount permitted to escape into the surrounding world.[1]
The later gathering of gods and the Nebu Calling place him within the island's wider religious and political order. A winner taking the title Alpha of Nebu becomes a ruler of the tribe; the title does not make that winner the god himself.[2]
The twelve and the binding
Sava's account at the temple explains that the twelve living gods maintain a binding through twelve stone anchors. Their father remains sealed, and the associated pressure disrupts shaped magic outside the protected court. The statues are anchors rather than the gods' bodies.[3]
