A Bote is a fictional ruling officer beside an Alpha in the Tribal Universe. In Nebu, Knargz holds the office under The Dark Alpha. The Bote serves as the ruler's voice, messenger, enforcer and shield. It is a title attached to a person, rather than Knargz's personal name.[1][2]
Duties
The Bote conveys orders, regulates access to the ruler and acts where the Alpha's authority requires a direct presence. Knargz's work extends beyond ceremonial speech: he pursues Rimitorry, commands wolves and performs dangerous assignments within the den. His quiet manner and familiarity with the founding family also make him an intermediary whose actions are not always explained to the people receiving his instructions.[3][4][5]
Appointment and survival
Nebu's Calling selects a three-person winning team for the positions of Alpha, Bote and Commander. At the Calling shown in Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha, the keeper names the Dark One Conri Tora the Thirty-Fourth, appoints Knargz Bote and names Zuberi Commander. Their common victory formalizes roles held by three people who already share a long history.[6]
The adult novel describes a tradition under which a Bote's fate is tied to the Alpha, in contrast with commanders who can survive into the Council of Wolves. This is the institutional rule described in the story, not evidence that Knargz dies in the supplied ending.[7][2]
Knargz and the concealed plan
Knargz gives Thirty-Two the ring sought beneath Nebu's original den and lets him leave with Rimitorry. Their escape initially looks like a breach of the Alpha's orders. A later private conversation establishes that giving them the key was part of the family's plan. The episode shows why identifying an office's formal loyalty is not sufficient to explain every action of its holder.[5]
