Oshara Venn is a fictional scout, warrior and knife fighter in the Tribal Universe. She first appears in Rimitorry: Daughter of the Dark Alpha, the first book in the Children of the Dark Alpha series by Tony James Nelson II, writing as Tribal Brown.[1]

Oshara is a dangerous warrior associated with Nhem’Rakul, the hidden settlement known as the Hollow Where Fire Dies. She is the only identified woman among the group that kidnaps four-year-old Rimitorry Ka’ Tora and carries her away from the territory of The Five.

Although Oshara participates in the kidnapping, she is distinguished from the more openly cruel members of the expedition. She carries Rimitorry when the terrain becomes difficult, gives her water, prevents Ma’rek Zhul from mocking her and reacts protectively when other adults move too close to the child.

Oshara also opposes Ma’rek after he suggests killing Eshari, the young survivor who helps The Five find Rimitorry. Her response makes it clear that attempting to harm the green-eyed child could result in a confrontation between them.

During the journey, Oshara acts as the expedition’s primary scout. She repeatedly disappears into the forest, returns without warning and reports how quickly The Five are approaching. Her information allows Zharo Vhun to organize delaying actions and prepare Nhem’Rakul for attack.

Oshara is last seen standing beside Zharo during the defense of Nhem’Rakul. Her fate after The Five enter the settlement is not revealed.

This article contains major plot details from Rimitorry: Daughter of the Dark Alpha.

Appearance

Oshara is described as a tall and quiet woman.

She wears dark red cloth wrapped around her arms and carries knives in numerous concealed positions. Rimitorry observes that Oshara appears to have a blade hidden almost everywhere a weapon could reasonably be concealed.[1]

Her known physical and visual characteristics include:

  • tall stature;
  • dark red cloth around both arms;
  • multiple hidden knives;
  • a short blade used to cut through vegetation;
  • a quiet and controlled presence;
  • movements suited to stealth and wilderness travel.

After scouting through wet forest, leaves cling to her shoulders while her breathing remains controlled. Even when she has been moving quickly through difficult terrain, she is capable of returning without immediately revealing physical exhaustion.

Rimitorry associates Oshara with the scents of smoke, rain-soaked plants and crushed vegetation. Her warm arms contrast with the danger represented by the weapons she carries.

This contrast becomes central to Rimitorry’s first impression of her. Oshara is clearly dangerous, but she is also the person who carries and cares for the exhausted child during the journey.

Personality

Oshara is quiet, disciplined, observant and physically intimidating.

She rarely wastes words. Much of her authority is communicated through posture, expression and silence rather than threats.

Ma’rek Zhul, a warrior who openly threatens others, stops laughing when Oshara looks at him. Rimitorry interprets his reaction as evidence that men like Ma’rek may not fear many people, but they carefully measure Oshara because they understand how dangerous she is.[1]

Oshara possesses several defining qualities:

  • emotional control;
  • strong observational ability;
  • confidence without unnecessary boasting;
  • willingness to participate in morally questionable missions;
  • reluctance to harm children;
  • loyalty to Nhem’Rakul;
  • respect for courage;
  • readiness to confront crueler members of her own group;
  • awareness of danger before others fully accept it.

Unlike Ma’rek, Oshara does not treat Rimitorry as an object of hatred.

She recognizes that the girl is connected to The Five but continues responding to her as a frightened and exhausted child. Her care does not free Rimitorry or end the kidnapping, making her compassion limited and morally complicated.

Oshara is neither an innocent protector nor a purely cruel antagonist. She helps carry out the crime while also preventing the situation from becoming more violent than Zharo intended.

Biography

Life in Nhem’Rakul

Oshara lived in or was closely connected to Nhem’Rakul, a concealed settlement deep within Murder Island.

Nhem’Rakul was built inside a hollow surrounded by black cliffs, enormous tree roots and difficult forest terrain. Huts were attached to rock walls, rope bridges connected elevated platforms and smoke was directed through openings in the ground to prevent the settlement from being discovered.[1]

The novel does not reveal Oshara’s childhood, parents, age or exact rank.

Her responsibilities indicate that she was an experienced and trusted member of Nhem’Rakul’s defenses. She appears to have been familiar with:

  • the hidden routes leading to the settlement;
  • the surrounding forests;
  • tracking methods used by The Five;
  • the location of nearby villages;
  • the outer trails and ravines;
  • methods of approaching and leaving Nhem’Rakul without revealing its position.

Zharo relies on her reports when making critical decisions. This suggests that Oshara occupied a respected military position, even if no formal title is given.

Rimitorry’s kidnapping

Oshara participates in the operation to kidnap four-year-old Rimitorry Ka’ Tora.

The group is led by Zharo Vhun and includes:

Rimitorry does not resist the kidnappers because a mysterious man claiming to be the original Conri Tora has already told her that they are coming.

He promises that the armed group will take her to other children and instructs her not to scream.

The kidnapping party is therefore surprised to find Rimitorry waiting calmly instead of running, fighting or crying.

Oshara travels beside the child while Zharo leads the group and Ma’rek follows nearby.

When the path becomes steep, Oshara lifts Rimitorry and carries her against her side. She does not ask permission, but she also does not handle the child violently.

Rimitorry believes she should hate Oshara for participating in the kidnapping. However, exhaustion causes her to notice the warmth of Oshara’s arms as much as the danger surrounding her.

Treatment of Rimitorry

Oshara is the member of the kidnapping party who provides Rimitorry with the most direct physical care.

During a morning rest, she gives the child water from a skin pouch.

Rimitorry drinks too quickly, begins coughing and spills water down her chin. Ma’rek laughs quietly at her.

Oshara looks at him.

He immediately stops.

The moment establishes that Oshara does not tolerate unnecessary humiliation of the captive child. She does not need to threaten Ma’rek aloud because he understands the meaning of her expression.

Oshara later carries Rimitorry for portions of the journey and allows her to sleep against her shoulder.

The care she provides does not make the kidnapping harmless. Rimitorry remains frightened, separated from her family and uncertain about what will happen to her.

Oshara’s behavior instead demonstrates the difference between physical kindness and actual safety.

She comforts a child while helping transport that child into captivity.

Role as scout

Oshara serves as the kidnapping party’s primary scout.

She repeatedly leaves the group to examine the forest ahead and behind them. Her ability to disappear and return without warning suggests advanced stealth and tracking skills.

During her first major report, Oshara emerges from the trees with wet leaves attached to her shoulders. Although her breathing remains even, her eyes reveal that the situation has worsened.

She informs Zharo that The Five are much closer than expected.

Her estimate places them approximately six hours behind the group, possibly less if they continue moving at the same pace.[1]

The warning forces Zharo to make his first major delaying decision.

He orders Tavu Nhek to remain behind and mislead or slow The Five.

Farewell to Tavu Nhek

Tavu Nhek is the youngest identified warrior in the group.

Before being ordered to remain behind, he openly objects to kidnapping Rimitorry. He argues that the warriors should have confronted The Five directly instead of using a child as part of their strategy.

Ma’rek threatens him for speaking against the plan.

When Zharo orders Tavu to stay behind, the group understands that the assignment will probably result in his death.

Ma’rek appears satisfied because he views the order as punishment for Tavu’s earlier criticism.

Oshara does not share his reaction.

She studies Tavu for a long moment, removes a thin black cord from her wrist and ties it around his spear.

“For silence,” she tells him.

The exact cultural meaning of the cord is not explained. It may represent:

  • a farewell;
  • protection;
  • respect for a warrior facing death;
  • a wish for silence during concealment;
  • a personal symbol shared between Oshara and Tavu.

No interpretation is explicitly confirmed.

Tavu is never seen again.

Oshara’s gesture suggests that she respects his fear and understands the true cost of Zharo’s order, even though she does not openly challenge it.

Discovery of Eshari

After Tavu is left behind, Oshara continues scouting.

She later returns with a second warning.

This time, her usual calm is visibly disturbed.

Oshara reports that The Five stopped at a village previously raided and burned by members of the expedition. The raiders had sought food, medicine and cloth, but the attack left destroyed stores, bodies and at least one surviving witness.

The survivor is a young girl with green eyes.

The child is Eshari.

Eshari tells The Five that she saw men with painted faces carrying Rimitorry east. She then directs them toward the kidnappers’ trail.

Oshara understands that this information eliminates the group’s remaining advantage. The Five are no longer searching blindly. They now know the correct direction.

When Zharo asks whether the witness was an adult warrior, Oshara explains that she was a child approximately five or six years old.

Oshara also describes Eshari as alive and watchful, suggesting that she immediately recognizes the girl’s unusual awareness.

Confrontation with Ma’rek

After hearing Oshara’s report, Ma’rek proposes killing Eshari before she can provide any further assistance.

Oshara responds coldly:

“You can try.”

The statement carries an unmistakable warning.

Ma’rek does not laugh, argue or act on his threat.

Oshara’s response can be interpreted in several ways.

She may believe:

  • Eshari is too well protected by The Five to reach;
  • Ma’rek would die if he attempted to approach her;
  • killing a young witness would cross a boundary she refuses to accept;
  • she would personally interfere if Ma’rek tried;
  • Eshari is more dangerous than her age suggests.

The novel does not explicitly choose one interpretation.

However, the exchange clearly distinguishes Oshara from Ma’rek. Both participate in Rimitorry’s kidnapping, but Oshara refuses to casually accept the murder of another child.

Eshari survives and later becomes Rimitorry’s chosen older sister.

Report concerning Tavu

After learning that Eshari has exposed their route, Zharo asks Oshara whether she has received any sign from Tavu.

Oshara lowers her eyes and answers that she has not.

The silence following her response confirms what the group already suspects.

Tavu has failed to stop The Five and is probably dead.

Oshara does not display Ma’rek’s satisfaction. Her lowered gaze suggests grief, respect or recognition of the sacrifice.

The book does not state whether Oshara and Tavu had a relationship beyond serving together. The black cord and her reaction to his disappearance indicate that his death affected her personally, but the exact nature of that connection remains unknown.

Final journey to Nhem’Rakul

After Ma’rek, Eru’Kai and six warriors are sent back to confront The Five, Oshara continues toward Nhem’Rakul with Zharo and the remaining group.

She walks ahead of them, cutting through vines with a short blade.

The route becomes increasingly difficult to follow. Paths disappear, vegetation thickens and the travelers descend through a ravine lined with black stone and pale moss.

Oshara’s ability to guide the group through this terrain demonstrates her knowledge of Nhem’Rakul’s concealed approaches.

The settlement eventually appears inside a hollow covered by massive roots.

When Rimitorry arrives, one of the children asks whether she is the daughter of The Five.

Oshara answers before Zharo can respond, confirming that she possesses enough authority to speak for the expedition.

Arrival with the children

After Zharo explains that Rimitorry will remain in Nhem’Rakul, Oshara gently touches the child’s shoulder.

She instructs her to go with Nahla Voss, one of the older children in the hollow.

The gesture continues Oshara’s pattern of controlled care.

She does not release Rimitorry, but she attempts to guide her toward other children instead of treating her like a military prisoner.

Oshara appears to understand that Rimitorry is frightened and may feel less threatened among children her own age.

The children of Nhem’Rakul do not offer the comfort Rimitorry expected. Their lives are defined by hiding, watching adults and surviving long enough to become useful.

Warning before the attack

The Five continue following the kidnappers and overcome every delaying force placed in their path.

When Nhem’Rakul’s warning horn sounds, the settlement begins preparing for battle.

Warriors move across rope bridges. Weapons are removed from storage. Fires are covered, smoke openings are closed and children are directed into hiding spaces.

Zharo stands near the central platform and begins shouting orders.

Oshara remains beside him.

She speaks quickly and points toward the upper ravine, apparently reporting the position or approach of The Five.[1]

Her expression has become sharper than before. Rimitorry believes Oshara finally understands that the force they attempted to control is arriving faster than fear can prepare for it.

This is Oshara’s final confirmed appearance.

Attack on Nhem’Rakul

The Five enter Nhem’Rakul from above, moving through the roots surrounding the hollow.

The attackers are:

Nhem’Rakul possesses dozens of warriors, elevated defensive positions, bows, spears and concealed traps.

These defenses are not enough.

The Five kill the warriors positioned in the roots and descend into the settlement. Fighting spreads across the bridges, platforms and huts.

Kavumo eventually finds Rimitorry and removes her from the central battle.

Oshara is not mentioned again after the attack begins.

The novel does not show:

  • Oshara being killed;
  • Oshara escaping;
  • Oshara surrendering;
  • Oshara being captured;
  • Oshara joining Zharo;
  • Oshara among the surviving children or displaced residents.

Her fate therefore remains unresolved.

Relationship with Rimitorry Ka’ Tora

Oshara’s relationship with Rimitorry Ka’ Tora is morally complicated.

She participates in the child’s kidnapping but becomes the person in the group who provides the most care.

Oshara:

  • walks beside Rimitorry;
  • carries her across difficult terrain;
  • allows the child to sleep against her;
  • gives her water;
  • stops Ma’rek from mocking her;
  • shifts protectively when Eru’Kai approaches her;
  • touches her shoulder gently;
  • directs her toward the children of Nhem’Rakul.

These actions make Oshara less openly cruel than Ma’rek, but they do not absolve her of responsibility.

She never frees Rimitorry or openly objects to the kidnapping.

Her behavior teaches Rimitorry an important truth about danger: people who provide warmth and comfort may still be helping to take away someone’s freedom.

Oshara is dangerous precisely because kindness and captivity exist beside each other in her actions.

Relationship with Zharo Vhun

Zharo Vhun commands the kidnapping operation and appears to trust Oshara as his principal scout.

She provides him with crucial information concerning:

  • the distance between the kidnappers and The Five;
  • the discovery of Eshari;
  • the direction revealed by the witness;
  • the absence of communication from Tavu;
  • the final approach through the upper ravine.

Zharo pays close attention to changes in Oshara’s expression. Before her second major report, he recognizes immediately that the news is serious.

During the final defense, Oshara remains beside him near the central platform.

Their relationship appears to be based on military trust and shared responsibility for Nhem’Rakul’s survival.

The novel does not confirm whether they share any romantic or familial connection.

Relationship with Ma’rek Zhul

Oshara and Ma’rek Zhul are both experienced members of the kidnapping party, but their approaches to violence are different.

Ma’rek is openly aggressive, suspicious and willing to kill children he considers threats.

Oshara is quieter and more selective.

She demonstrates authority over him without holding an explicitly stated rank. A single look is enough to stop him from laughing at Rimitorry.

Their most important confrontation occurs after Ma’rek suggests killing Eshari.

Oshara’s warning prevents the suggestion from becoming a serious plan.

Ma’rek’s willingness to measure Oshara indicates that he respects her fighting ability and understands that provoking her could have dangerous consequences.

Relationship with Tavu Nhek

Oshara shows more concern for Tavu Nhek than the other senior warriors.

When Zharo orders Tavu to remain behind, she does not celebrate or criticize him for being afraid.

Instead, she ties a black cord from her wrist around his spear.

Her action functions as a private recognition of what he is being asked to do.

When no message arrives from him, Oshara lowers her eyes before reporting his silence.

These moments suggest respect and possible affection, though the novel does not define their relationship.

Oshara may have viewed Tavu as:

  • a younger warrior under her protection;
  • a friend;
  • a relative;
  • a student;
  • a fellow fighter whose moral objection she respected.

None of these possibilities is confirmed in current canon.

Relationship with Eshari

Oshara never directly speaks to Eshari in a confirmed scene.

She observes Eshari from a distance while scouting and reports the girl’s actions to Zharo.

Oshara recognizes several important details:

  • Eshari survived the burned village;
  • she watched the kidnappers;
  • she identified Rimitorry;
  • she communicated with The Five;
  • she accurately directed them east.

When Ma’rek proposes killing Eshari, Oshara warns him against trying.

This moment creates an indirect connection between the two women.

Oshara helps prevent an immediate attempt on Eshari’s life, while Eshari’s information helps bring about the destruction of Oshara’s home.

Eshari later becomes Rimitorry’s sister and one of the most observant members of the Ka’Rukan family.

Relationship with Eru’Kai

Eru’Kai is an elder connected to the Nhem’Rakul group.

When Eru’Kai approaches Rimitorry and reaches toward her face, Oshara shifts closer.

The movement suggests that she is prepared to intervene if he harms or frightens the child.

Oshara otherwise does not openly challenge the elder’s influence or his interpretation of Murder Island’s will.

Her behavior contrasts with his more prophetic worldview. Eru’Kai speaks about signs, memory and forces moving events. Oshara focuses on visible trails, distance, witnesses and approaching danger.

Relationship with The Five

Oshara serves as one of the first characters to understand how quickly The Five can move when one of their children is threatened.

She repeatedly scouts them and reports their progress.

Each report demonstrates that they are closer than the kidnappers expected.

Oshara never directly fights a named member of The Five in a depicted scene. However, she prepares to defend Nhem’Rakul against them and is present when they enter the settlement.

Her final fate may be connected to that battle, but current canon does not identify which member of The Five encountered her or whether she survived.

Abilities and skills

Oshara is portrayed as one of Nhem’Rakul’s most capable scouts and warriors.

Her known or implied abilities include:

  • advanced wilderness scouting;
  • stealth;
  • tracking;
  • counter-tracking;
  • concealed weapon use;
  • knife fighting;
  • short-blade combat;
  • rapid movement through dense forest;
  • route navigation;
  • threat assessment;
  • silent observation;
  • physical strength;
  • endurance;
  • intelligence gathering;
  • command presence.

She can leave the group unnoticed and reappear from the forest with information about people moving several hours behind them.

Her breathing remains controlled after extended scouting, suggesting considerable endurance and physical conditioning.

The ease with which she carries Rimitorry also demonstrates strength.

The exact level and properties of Oshara’s Ka’ru are not revealed.

Weapons

Concealed knives

Oshara carries multiple knives hidden across her clothing and body.

The exact number is not stated.

Rimitorry’s description implies that Oshara has prepared weapons for numerous combat situations and can reach a knife from almost any position.

The concealed blades reflect her preference for preparation and surprise.

Short blade

Oshara uses a short blade to cut through vines while guiding the group toward Nhem’Rakul.

The weapon may be one of her concealed knives or a separate wilderness tool.

No supernatural abilities are associated with it in the novel.

Character analysis

Compassion without innocence

Oshara is compassionate compared with several other members of the kidnapping party.

She protects Rimitorry from mockery, provides water and opposes killing Eshari.

However, she remains an active participant in the kidnapping.

Her character demonstrates that compassion does not automatically make a person innocent. Someone can recognize suffering, reduce cruelty and still help sustain the situation causing the suffering.

Quiet authority

Oshara does not depend on speeches or formal titles to establish authority.

Ma’rek stops when she looks at him. Zharo listens to her reports. Tavu accepts the cord she ties around his spear.

Her influence comes from competence and the expectation that she is capable of acting on her warnings.

The dangerous protector

Oshara occupies the position of both captor and protector.

She is armed with hidden blades and helps steal Rimitorry from her family. At the same time, she becomes the safest adult immediately beside the child during the journey.

This contradiction reflects one of the larger themes of Rimitorry: Daughter of the Dark Alpha: protection and control can exist so close together that children may struggle to distinguish them.

Practical intelligence

While Eru’Kai interprets events through prophecy and Ma’rek responds through aggression, Oshara gathers information.

She studies:

  • distance;
  • movement;
  • witnesses;
  • trails;
  • timing;
  • changes in behavior.

Her practical intelligence gives Zharo accurate warnings, even though he cannot create a strategy capable of stopping The Five.

Recognition of doomed choices

Oshara appears to understand the expedition’s worsening position before several others do.

She knows Tavu’s assignment will probably kill him.

She recognizes the importance of Eshari surviving.

She understands that The Five are moving too quickly.

By the final defense, her expression shows that the danger can no longer be controlled.

Oshara does not openly abandon the plan, but she appears increasingly aware of its consequences.

Narrative role

Oshara serves several functions in the Nhem’Rakul storyline.

Humanizing the kidnappers

Her care toward Rimitorry prevents the kidnapping party from appearing as a group of identical villains.

Some members are cruel, some afraid, some conflicted and some convinced that the mission is necessary.

Oshara demonstrates that people involved in harmful acts can retain compassion without becoming free of responsibility.

Contrast with Ma’rek Zhul

Ma’rek treats children as threats that can be eliminated.

Oshara continues to recognize them as children.

Their contrast establishes the moral divisions within Nhem’Rakul’s forces.

Source of information

Oshara’s scouting reports control the pace of the pursuit.

Through her, the kidnappers and readers learn that The Five are approaching faster than expected.

Each return increases the tension and forces Zharo to sacrifice more members of the group.

Symbol of Nhem’Rakul’s hidden strength

Oshara embodies the qualities that allowed Nhem’Rakul to survive:

  • silence;
  • concealment;
  • vigilance;
  • hidden weapons;
  • knowledge of the forest.

Her inability to stop the final attack also demonstrates that secrecy alone could not protect the settlement after its leaders provoked The Five.

Themes

Kindness within captivity

Oshara treats Rimitorry gently while continuing to hold her captive.

The relationship raises questions about whether kindness can reduce the moral responsibility attached to control.

Women and power

Oshara does not need a declared leadership title to be respected as dangerous.

Her authority is demonstrated through the reactions of warriors around her.

She is neither physically passive nor dependent upon male protection.

Silence

Silence is repeatedly connected to Oshara.

She moves quietly, speaks briefly and uses looks instead of threats.

Her black cord for Tavu is also associated with silence.

For Oshara, silence can represent:

  • stealth;
  • respect;
  • warning;
  • grief;
  • survival;
  • death.

Seeing children as children

Several adults in the expedition reduce Rimitorry and Eshari to political problems.

Oshara does not entirely escape this system, but she resists its most extreme form.

She participates in using Rimitorry as leverage yet refuses to treat every child connected to the conflict as an acceptable target.

Fate and status

Oshara’s fate is not confirmed.

She is last seen:

  • standing beside Zharo Vhun;
  • reporting activity near the upper ravine;
  • preparing for the arrival of The Five;
  • inside Nhem’Rakul immediately before the attack.

Unlike Zharo, Oshara is not specifically confirmed to have escaped.

Unlike Ma’rek and Tavu, she is not sent away on an interception mission from which she never returns.

Unlike the settlement’s unnamed warriors, her death is not depicted.

There is also no confirmed body or later statement declaring her dead.

Her canonical status should therefore remain:

Unknown following the attack on Nhem’Rakul.

Possible survival, death, capture or escape should not be treated as established until later Tribal Universe canon provides an answer.

Legacy

Oshara’s known actions contribute to several major events in the early Tribal Universe.

She participates in:

  • Rimitorry’s kidnapping;
  • the flight toward Nhem’Rakul;
  • the attempted delay of The Five;
  • the discovery that Eshari survived;
  • the preparation of Nhem’Rakul’s defenses.

The kidnapping ultimately leads to:

  • the destruction of Nhem’Rakul;
  • the rescue of Rimitorry;
  • Eshari joining Rimitorry’s family;
  • Polezah and other surviving children being absorbed into Ka’Rukan;
  • Rimitorry’s father deciding that limited territory cannot protect his family;
  • the expansion of the Ka’Rukan Empire.

Oshara is therefore connected to one of the most important turning points in Rimitorry’s childhood and the political history of Murder Island.

Her unresolved fate also leaves open the possibility that she may return in a later Tribal Universe story.
