Nhem’Rakul, translated as the Hollow Where Fire Dies, was a hidden settlement located deep within Murder Island in the Tribal Universe. Concealed inside a bowl of black cliffs and enormous tree roots, the settlement was home to warriors, elders, families and children who lived according to strict rules of secrecy and survival.[1]

Nhem’Rakul is most notable for its role in the kidnapping of four-year-old Rimitorry Ka’ Tora. The operation was led by Zharo Vhun, who believed that taking the daughter of The Five could restrain or redirect their growing power.

Instead, the kidnapping brought The Five directly to the settlement. Nhem’Rakul’s warriors were overwhelmed, its structures were burned and its adult resistance was destroyed. The surviving children were taken from the ruins and absorbed into the community that later became the Ka’Rukan Empire.[1]

The destruction of Nhem’Rakul became one of the most important turning points in the early history of Ka’Rukan. It convinced Rimitorry’s father that defending a limited territory could never guarantee the safety of his family.

This article contains major plot details from Rimitorry: Daughter of the Dark Alpha.

Name

The name Nhem’Rakul means the Hollow Where Fire Dies.

The translation is explained by Eru’Kai, an elderly member of the settlement, while Rimitorry is being transported toward the hidden village.[1]

The name reflects the settlement’s method of concealment. Nhem’Rakul did not use exposed fires, visible torches or ordinary columns of smoke. Instead, its inhabitants covered their flames and redirected smoke through holes in the ground.

Eru’Kai also associated the name with the belief that fire does not truly disappear but changes what it burns.

The name became tragically symbolic when the settlement was eventually consumed by fire during the attack by The Five.

Location

Nhem’Rakul was located deep within a heavily forested region of Murder Island.

The route toward the settlement passed through:

  • dense trees that blocked much of the sky;
  • disappearing paths;
  • exposed roots;
  • narrow spaces between stones;
  • a descending ravine;
  • wet walls of black stone;
  • veins of pale, faintly glowing moss.

The settlement’s exact location was difficult to follow or remember. Rimitorry observed that the route appeared to close behind the travelers, creating the impression that the island itself did not want Nhem’Rakul to be found.[1]

The hidden geography allowed Zharo Vhun to believe that even The Five would be unable to locate the community.

He underestimated their determination, tracking ability and connection to Rimitorry.

Design and architecture

Nhem’Rakul was built inside a natural hollow surrounded by black cliffs.

Enormous roots covered the settlement from above. Rimitorry described them as resembling the fingers of sleeping giants. The roots helped conceal the village from anyone moving through the surrounding forest.

The community included:

  • huts attached to cliff walls;
  • platforms built at different elevations;
  • rope bridges between structures;
  • concealed spaces beneath buildings;
  • underground smoke openings;
  • central platforms;
  • weapon racks;
  • covered fires;
  • root holes used to hide children.

The village contained no bright banners, open torches or public songs. Nearly every part of the settlement was designed to avoid discovery.[1]

Smoke rose from openings in the ground instead of from visible fires. When danger approached, the smoke holes could be closed and the remaining flames covered.

The settlement’s architecture allowed its residents to disappear quickly while providing warriors with elevated positions from which to defend the hollow.

Society

Nhem’Rakul was populated by warriors, elders, families and children.

The settlement appears to have existed under a survival-based authority structure. Warriors obeyed figures such as Zharo Vhun, while the elderly Eru’Kai possessed influence because of his age, knowledge and apparent understanding of the island.

The settlement’s people survived through:

  • hunting;
  • gathering;
  • raiding;
  • hidden food stores;
  • medicine collection;
  • defensive warfare;
  • secrecy;
  • concealment from stronger powers.

Before Rimitorry’s arrival, members of Nhem’Rakul raided and burned a nearby village while seeking food, medicine and cloth. The attack left behind a surviving witness, Eshari, who later directed The Five toward the path used by Rimitorry’s kidnappers.[1]

The raid demonstrates that Nhem’Rakul was not merely a passive refuge. Its survival sometimes depended upon violence against neighboring communities.

Leadership

Zharo Vhun

Zharo Vhun was one of Nhem’Rakul’s primary military leaders.

He commanded the group responsible for kidnapping Rimitorry and issued orders to the warriors traveling with him. During the attack on the settlement, he was observed directing its defenders from the central platform.[1]

Zharo believed The Five were becoming too powerful and that their expansion would eventually threaten the rest of Murder Island.

He justified taking Rimitorry by comparing her father to a growing flame capable of burning the island. To Rimitorry, her father was a protector. To Zharo, he was the destruction that arrived before the ashes.

Although Zharo ordered the kidnapping, he repeatedly stated that Rimitorry was not to be harmed.

He escaped Nhem’Rakul before the settlement completely fell.

Eru’Kai

Eru’Kai was an elderly figure associated with the Vhar’Zhul and the community of Nhem’Rakul.

He had white hair, aged dark skin and one clouded eye. He appeared to possess knowledge of the island’s patterns and suggested that forces beyond the kidnappers were influencing events.

Eru’Kai supported or helped shape the plan involving Rimitorry. Zharo later blamed him when the situation became uncontrollable.

He was sent with Ma’rek Zhul and six warriors to intercept The Five near the black-root trail.

His final fate is not directly confirmed, but the failure of the interception and his absence during the defense of Nhem’Rakul indicate that he was likely killed.

Warriors

Nhem’Rakul possessed a significant defensive force.

Rimitorry, who was four years old at the time, estimated that approximately seventy-five to one hundred warriors may have been present. Because the estimate is given from the perspective of a young child during a chaotic event, the exact number remains uncertain.[1]

The settlement’s warriors used:

  • swords;
  • spears;
  • bows and arrows;
  • knives;
  • concealed traps;
  • elevated positions in the roots;
  • rope bridges as defensive platforms.

Despite the size of the force, the defenders were unable to stop The Five.

Oshara Venn

Oshara Venn was a skilled scout and warrior associated with Nhem’Rakul.

She was the only woman among the primary group transporting Rimitorry. Oshara carried multiple concealed knives and repeatedly moved ahead or behind the group to observe the approach of The Five.

She was less openly cruel toward Rimitorry than several of the other kidnappers. She carried the exhausted child, gave her water and opposed Ma’rek Zhul when he suggested killing Eshari.

Oshara later stood beside Zharo during Nhem’Rakul’s final defense.

Her ultimate fate is not explicitly confirmed.

Ma’rek Zhul

Ma’rek Zhul was a hard and openly hostile warrior.

He distrusted Rimitorry because she surrendered too easily and repeatedly emphasized that she was a child of The Five. He proposed killing Eshari after learning that the green-eyed child had revealed the kidnappers’ direction.

Zharo sent Ma’rek, Eru’Kai and six warriors to delay The Five at the black-root trail.

They failed to stop the approaching family. Ma’rek’s fate is not shown directly but he is presumed to have died during the failed interception.

Tavu Nhek

Tavu Nhek was a younger warrior who participated in Rimitorry’s kidnapping.

Unlike the others, Tavu openly questioned the morality of using a child as part of a military strategy. He argued that if Nhem’Rakul wanted to stop The Five, its warriors should have attacked them directly rather than abducting Rimitorry.

Zharo ordered Tavu to remain behind and mislead or delay The Five.

Tavu was never seen again. His lack of contact with the group strongly suggests that he was killed.

Children of Nhem’Rakul

Children living in Nhem’Rakul were trained to observe danger rather than experience an ordinary childhood.

They watched adults, memorized hiding places and learned the sounds of bridges, footsteps and warning horns. They knew where food and medicine were stored and which warriors might become dangerous.

The settlement’s children were taught three known rules:

  1. Do not cry where adults can hear.
  2. Do not ask when a missing mother is returning.
  3. Hide when the warning horn sounds.

The rules reveal a childhood dominated by loss, fear and the need to remain unnoticed.

When Rimitorry asked what the children did instead of playing, Nahla Voss answered that they survived.[1]

Nahla Voss

Nahla Voss was an outspoken young girl with black hair tied into two knots.

She appeared to have authority among the younger children and was the first to confront Rimitorry after her arrival. Nahla explained the children’s rules and pulled Rimitorry toward safety when the warning horn sounded.

After the settlement’s destruction, Nahla was among the children taken away by The Five.

Kovi Renn

Kovi Renn was a thin, quick-eyed and barefoot boy.

He was first seen carrying stolen fruit and responded to Rimitorry’s arrival with amusement. Kovi helped explain Nhem’Rakul’s survival rules.

He survived the attack and was taken into the territory of The Five.

Sura Keth

Sura Keth was a quiet, wide-eyed child who initially remained close to Nahla.

She appeared frightened and rarely spoke during Rimitorry’s arrival.

Sura survived the attack and was gathered with the other children.

Veyu Orak

Veyu Orak was an older boy who carried a wooden spear.

He immediately accused Rimitorry of bringing trouble to the hollow. When the warning horn sounded, he attempted to appear brave despite his visible fear.

Veyu survived the destruction of Nhem’Rakul and was taken by The Five.

Polezah

Polezah was an older boy, approximately eleven or twelve years old, who hid during the attack.

He was discovered behind a tree by Kavumo Dlamini. Polezah was deeply traumatized and initially believed Kavumo intended to kill him.

Kavumo carried him out of the burning settlement. Utrea then declared that Polezah would remain with their family and would be protected.

Polezah later became one of the children raised within the Ka’Rukan household.

Kidnapping of Rimitorry

The destruction of Nhem’Rakul began with the decision to kidnap four-year-old Rimitorry Ka’ Tora.

Rimitorry was the daughter of two members of the group becoming known as The Five. Her father’s Ka’ru and territorial influence were rapidly increasing, creating fear among rival communities.

A mysterious man claiming to be the original Conri Tora appeared to Rimitorry shortly before the kidnapping. He warned her that armed men were approaching and told her not to scream.

He also promised that they would take her to other children.

Because Rimitorry was lonely and desperately wanted companionship, she followed the kidnappers without resistance.

The kidnapping party included:

  • Zharo Vhun;
  • Oshara Venn;
  • Ma’rek Zhul;
  • Tavu Nhek;
  • Eru’Kai;
  • additional unnamed warriors.

Zharo ordered that no physical harm come to Rimitorry.

The group intended to carry her into Nhem’Rakul, where they believed the concealed settlement would prevent The Five from finding her.

The burned village

During the journey to Nhem’Rakul, the kidnappers raided a village while searching for food, medicine and cloth.

The raid left buildings burned and residents dead.

A young green-eyed survivor named Eshari remained hidden near the ruins. When The Five later reached the destroyed village, Eshari told them that she had seen men with painted faces carrying Rimitorry east.

Her directions placed The Five on the kidnappers’ trail.

Zharo recognized the raid as a major mistake because it created a witness capable of revealing their direction.

Ma’rek proposed killing Eshari, but Oshara warned him against attempting it.

Eshari later traveled with The Five and witnessed the destruction of Nhem’Rakul from outside the settlement.

Approach of The Five

Nhem’Rakul’s scouts discovered that The Five were following much more quickly than expected.

Tavu Nhek was ordered to remain behind first. Ma’rek, Eru’Kai and six additional warriors were later sent toward the black-root trail.

Neither group succeeded.

When Oshara warned that The Five had moved beyond the settlement’s outer defenses, Nhem’Rakul activated its warning system.

A low horn sounded through the hollow. Children moved toward hiding places while adults retrieved weapons and prepared traps.

Fires were covered and smoke holes closed.

Zharo issued commands from the central platform as warriors occupied the bridges, roots and elevated defensive positions.

Attack on Nhem’Rakul

The attack on Nhem’Rakul, also described retrospectively as a massacre, began when The Five entered the hollow from above.

The attackers were:

Nim’Raza did not participate because she remained behind to protect the family’s existing territory.[1]

The Five descended through the enormous roots surrounding the settlement and attacked Nhem’Rakul’s defenders.

Warriors positioned in the roots were killed first. Fighting then spread across the platforms, bridges, huts and central areas of the hollow.

Despite possessing dozens of warriors, traps and superior defensive positions, Nhem’Rakul could not withstand The Five’s Ka’ru, speed and combat ability.

Rimitorry witnessed portions of the attack before Kavumo found her and covered her eyes. She later explained that he did not prevent her from seeing the massacre; he only prevented her from seeing its conclusion.

By the end of the battle:

  • the adult military resistance had been destroyed;
  • many huts were burning;
  • bridges were damaged or left swaying in the heat;
  • adult leaders and defenders were missing or dead;
  • the surviving children had no remaining community capable of protecting them.

Destruction

Nhem’Rakul was effectively destroyed during the attack.

The settlement’s defining concealment system failed when its fires spread openly across the hollow. Smoke rose through the black roots, huts burned and bodies were left among the platforms and trees.

The location known as the Hollow Where Fire Dies was ultimately consumed by the fire it had been designed to hide.

Zharo Vhun escaped before the settlement completely fell.

Rimitorry’s father called for him during the battle but received no answer. His escape created a personal debt that Rimitorry’s father intended to collect in the future.

The status of Oshara Venn and several other adult residents remains unknown.

Surviving children

After the battle, The Five gathered the surviving children.

Known survivors included:

  • Nahla Voss;
  • Kovi Renn;
  • Sura Keth;
  • Veyu Orak;
  • Polezah;
  • additional unnamed children.

Some followed willingly. Others were too frightened or traumatized to move without assistance.

Utrea approached the children calmly and helped several remember that they were still children rather than enemy warriors.

Rimitorry’s father ordered that they be taken home.

The surviving children were absorbed into the expanding household and territory of The Five. This decision meant that the destruction of Nhem’Rakul did not end the histories of its children. Instead, their lives became connected to the creation of the Ka’Rukan Empire.

Eshari also joined the family after the attack, although she was a survivor of the previously burned village rather than a resident of Nhem’Rakul.

Connection to the Ka’Rukan Empire

The destruction of Nhem’Rakul directly influenced the creation of the Ka’Rukan Empire.

Before Rimitorry’s kidnapping, The Five controlled and defended a growing territory. Her father still believed the family could remain safe by protecting the land immediately around them.

Nhem’Rakul proved that enemies could reach his children despite those defenses.

After rescuing Rimitorry, he concluded that safety could not merely be guarded. Every possible threat had to be conquered before it approached the family.

This belief caused The Five to expand their influence across:

  • villages;
  • hunting paths;
  • river crossings;
  • ridges;
  • border forests;
  • strategic territory.

What began as family protection gradually became Ka’Rukan, the Empire of Ka’ru-Blood.

Nhem’Rakul therefore occupies a central position in Ka’Rukan history. The settlement did not simply fall to the future empire. Its destruction helped create the ideology that caused the empire to rise.

Legacy

Nhem’Rakul left several important legacies within the Tribal Universe.

Origin of Ka’Rukan expansion

The kidnapping convinced Rimitorry’s father that limited borders were insufficient. The resulting campaign transformed The Five from territorial warriors into imperial rulers.

Children of the hollow

Nahla, Kovi, Sura, Veyu, Polezah and other survivors became connected to Rimitorry’s family and the Ka’Rukan community.

The children carried Nhem’Rakul’s survival habits with them, including watchfulness, emotional restraint and knowledge of how adults behave during danger.

Rimitorry’s trauma

The attack became one of Rimitorry’s earliest memories of mass violence.

Although the battle was fought to rescue her, she understood that her presence had brought war to the children living in the hollow. The experience contributed to her complicated understanding of protection, family and conquest.

Zharo Vhun’s escape

Zharo’s survival left the conflict unresolved.

He became one of the few adult leaders of Nhem’Rakul known to have escaped the settlement’s destruction. His actions and disappearance created an unfinished conflict with Rimitorry’s father.

The first Conri Tora

Rimitorry saw the mysterious original Conri Tora near the edge of the burning settlement.

He appeared to be watching the consequences of the events he had helped place in motion. His presence suggests that Nhem’Rakul’s destruction formed part of a larger chain of events connected to Rimitorry’s father eventually receiving the name Conri Tora.

Themes and interpretation

Survival without childhood

Nhem’Rakul represents a society in which children are permitted to survive but are not fully permitted to be children.

They do not play freely. They watch adults, memorize danger and hide their emotions to avoid becoming targets.

Concealment and fear

The village’s architecture reflects the psychology of its inhabitants.

Everything is hidden:

  • homes;
  • smoke;
  • weapons;
  • children;
  • paths;
  • fear.

The settlement survives by refusing to be seen, but that secrecy cannot protect it after its leaders directly challenge The Five.

Protection and exploitation

Zharo claims to be protecting Murder Island from an expanding threat. However, his strategy requires using a four-year-old child as leverage.

The destruction of Nhem’Rakul demonstrates how a plan justified as collective protection can become the cause of collective suffering.

Fire

Fire carries several meanings in the Nhem’Rakul storyline.

The settlement hides fire to survive. Its name suggests a place where fire disappears. Zharo describes Rimitorry’s father as a flame capable of burning the island.

Ultimately, the attempt to contain that flame brings it directly into the hollow.

Children inheriting adult wars

The adults of Nhem’Rakul make political and military decisions, but the surviving children experience the consequences.

They lose their homes and are transferred into the protection of the same warriors who destroyed their community.

This reflects a recurring Tribal Universe theme in which children inherit the wars, enemies and unfinished decisions of earlier generations.
