The Arena is the ancient tournament ground on Murder Island where the Tribal Universe's Callings are decided. It is a shared site for contests associated with different tribes and vacant offices. Its laws and boundaries temporarily restrain people whose ordinary life on the island is governed by warfare and survival.[1][2]
Function and rules
The Arena is built of old stone and preserves the names of winners. A Calling responds to a need for leadership outside the island. Its rules vary with the tribe and position: Nebu selects a three-person ruling team, Gia selects a queen, and Terra's contests differ between the Alpha and Commander positions.[1][2][3]
Nim’Raza's Terra Commander contest allows killing and surrender. Her final opponent yields, and she spares him. That mercy is permitted by the contest, while the earlier fifth opponent, Yava Stone-Eater, dies. It would be inaccurate to transfer the nonlethal rules of Kavumo's Alpha Calling to every bout held in the Arena.[2]
Boundaries and departure
Armies must stop at the Calling boundary, even when they belong to the most powerful household on the island. The rulers' family can watch but cannot simply replace the contest with its own soldiers. Winners and recognized claimed children subsequently pass through the authorized departure process.[4][3]
The departures of Nim’Raza, Kavumo, Utrea and the later Nebu winners make the Arena a place of separation as well as victory. Children raised together remain behind while others leave, shaping Eshari's and the other siblings' sense of abandonment.[5][6][7][3]
Nebu's Calling
The final chapter of Eshari's novel shows the Dark One, Knargz and Zuberi winning together. The keeper bestows the name Conri Tora on the thirty-fourth Alpha and appoints his companions Bote and Commander. Nebu then offers the Blood of Nebu to the departing household. The combat, the appointment and the acceptance of that blood are related but distinct stages.[3]
