Ash-Horns
Ash-Horns are a fictional military formation in the Tribal Universe, serving the Ka’Rukan Empire. The unit develops as the founders organize the population and resources gathered around Khar’Rukan. Its members serve alongside other specialist troops rather than constituting the entire imperial army.[1]
Duties and equipment
The Ash-Horns carry orders through battle and signals between watch posts and distant fires. As the army develops, coded calls communicate over miles and connect the capital with its roads and returning columns.[2][3]
Their characteristic equipment consists of horns; coded calls; running and mounted messages. The source describes a practical military role, not a uniform set of supernatural powers possessed by every member.[2][3]
Organization
Zuberi develops the new formations’ purposes, Nim’Raza their discipline, and Oru’Kesh the names and rhetoric that give the soldiers a shared public identity. That process draws on the empire’s coercive expansion and the skills of the people absorbed into it.[1]
The unit appears among the mixed forces placed under the young heirs. Different campaigns allocate different numbers of soldiers, scouts, riders and specialists. A mission’s headcount is therefore not a fixed total for the unit throughout the books.[4][5]
Campaign history
Six Ash-Horns are assigned within the original130-warrior force given to the heirs. Their signaling function remains distinct from the heirs’ command role and from Ashmouth’s public preaching.[3][4][6]
The unit belongs to the imperial military. The Red Heirs are the younger family and command group raised under the founders; their relationship with the soldiers is one of command and shared campaigns, not identical membership.[5][6]
