Gia (deity)
Gia is a fictional goddess in the Tribal Universe and one of the living gods on Murder Island. She is distinct from the tribe later ruled by Utrea. Her role in Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha explains how Yanna survives the causeway disaster.[1]
Appearance
Gia appears as a young woman with dark skin, white clothing and silver markings resembling branches. Her youthful appearance is not a stated biological age. Water, reflected light and distance respond to her presence, making the setting around her part of the demonstration of her power.[1]
Yanna's survival
Gia reveals that she moved Yanna away from the causeway, carrying her three ridges from the place where she would otherwise have died. Her explanation connects that protection to Yanna's marriage to Sakori and Sakori's place as Utrea's claimed son. The rescue preserves Yanna's life without immediately reuniting her with Sakori.[1]
Eshari later finds and heals Yanna through a different chain of events. Gia's intervention and Eshari's healing are successive contributions to her survival, not competing identities for the same rescuer.[2][1]
Choice of departure
Gia offers Yanna a possible route off the island when Yanna truly chooses to leave. The offer is personal and conditional; it is not proof that every island-born person may depart at will. Gia addresses the distinction between a queen and an Alpha, while Yanna's responsibilities keep her in the empire at the novel's departure.[1]
The goddess also appears among the divine observers of the later contests. Her presence connects private intervention in Yanna's life with the larger institution of the Callings.[1]
