The Root-Eaters are a fictional hostile war band and network of camps in the Tribal Universe. Associated with the Koth’Mara Wilds, they become a major target of the Ka’Rukan Empire after Zafira is taken from the Six-Flame Palace. Their conflict with the young heirs is recounted from different perspectives in the three Children of the Dark Alpha novels.[1][2][3]
Zafira's kidnapping
The children follow the kidnappers beyond the capital's protected lines and recover Zafira. After the rescue, Zuberi identifies a carved token as belonging to a Koth’Mara Root-Eater war band. The founders respond by ordering action against its camps and the wider threat to their children.[1]
The Red Heirs' campaign
The founders place130 warriors under the young heirs, who divide their force for operations against the camps. The attackers use woodland ambushes, trapped entrances and false appearances. At the Stone Mouth Caves, finding a second tunnel matters to the assault; at other sites the heirs rely on observation and knowledge of local behavior to expose threats.[4][2][5]
The operation does not end without losses. Sakori records nine dead soldiers by the return to Khar’Rukan, including deaths during the escape from Vosh’Kalen. The same campaign brings the infant Khalembo into the household, linking the heirs' first substantial command with both rescue and military casualties.[5]
Later remnants
Former Root-Eaters appear among the raiders and mercenaries controlling Varesh Crossing. This later reference means the destruction of particular camps should not be expanded into an unsupported claim that every person ever associated with the band is killed at once.[6]
The name describes a hostile organization and its associated people. It is distinct from the Wilds themselves and from unrelated Chamber survivors encountered during later individual trials.[1][7]
