Ma’Kela

Ma’Kela is a fictional mason in the Tribal Universe. A skilled worker taken from Tal’Ruun, she helps construct the walls of Khar’Rukan and the Six-Flame Palace in Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha. Her role connects the empire's monumental buildings with the people and labor acquired through conquest.

Tal’Ruun

After Zuberi and Nim’Raza subdue Tal’Ruun, Ma’Kela marks quarry routes and stone seams for the conquerors. Her daughter initially remains to direct work at the quarry. Ma’Kela is among the skilled workers taken north to meet Khar’Rukan's shortages. The movement is coerced; Ashmouth's claim that they have gained a new purpose does not alter that circumstance.

Ma’Kela openly resists his rhetoric and later refuses to begin the wall until the workers' restraints are removed. Utrea cuts the ropes after an argument with Kavumo. Ma’Kela gives her word that the workers will stay. The scene gives the builders a limited but consequential part in negotiating their conditions.

Building Khar’Rukan

She studies the ridge, places foundations and adjusts the structure to the demands made by the six rulers. The palace plan includes equal towers, interior wells, several gates and a protected arrangement for the children. Eshari draws the sixth tower to insist on Nim’Raza's equal place; Ma’Kela explains the corresponding changes in weight, stone and foundation.

By the following phase of construction, she carries keys rather than restraints and chooses to live inside the walls. Her daughter is there with her. The narrative describes that change without pretending that the original journey from Tal’Ruun was voluntary.

The Six-Flame Palace

Ma’Kela's work is distinct from Oru’Kesh's naming of the palace and from the founders' requirements for its rooms and defenses. She also provides the round stone table at its center after tiring of arguments over the important end of a long table. Her practical decisions shape both the building's structure and the way its ruling household occupies it.
