Kalen

Kalen is a fictional character in the opening of Sakori: Son of the Dark Alpha. He is one of Sakori's biological brothers and lives with their family in Vhar’Kori before its conquest by the founders of Ka’Rukan.

Defense of Vhar’Kori

The village's animals, supplies, horses and skilled workers make it a target for imperial expansion. Its attempt to surrender enough resources to survive fails when the attackers demand everything. Kalen takes up a boar spear during the ensuing resistance. The villagers are unable to match the power of the conquerors.

Death and family

Kalen dies during the destruction, as do his brother Jarek and the parents of the household. Nine-year-old Sakori survives and is taken away after the Dark One claims him. His later life with Utrea and the imperial children follows this loss; the new household is separate from the biological family described in the opening.

The chapter names Jarek and Kalen but does not give names for their parents. Their deaths belong to Sakori's witnessed childhood, rather than to his later battles as one of the Red Heirs.
