The Bloodstone Yard is a fictional training ground in the Six-Flame Palace at Khar’Rukan. It is one of the central places where the founders of the Ka’Rukan Empire train their children and soldiers in the Tribal Universe. It is distinct from the Arena used for Callings and from Nebu's later Training Tower.[1][2]
Layout and function
The yard is described as a broad circle of red-black stone, surrounded by six statues although only five initially have inscribed names. As the capital expands, it gains a second ring for younger trainees. It forms part of a larger palace complex that contains living quarters, maps, stores, medicine and the rulers' governing rooms.[1]
Training and family
The Dark One trains Sakori in the yard from early morning, while the other adults contribute their own lessons. Combat, falling, strategy and controlled Ka’ru are taught as practical skills. The lessons also shape relationships: Sakori's resistance to the people who destroyed his home changes while he learns from them, without making the original conquest disappear.[1][3]
Eshari, Rimitorry and the other heirs repeatedly return to the yard as their abilities and responsibilities develop. It is both a military institution and a place where the household's affection, rivalry, punishment and hierarchy become visible.[1][4]
Later use
After the causeway battle, Sakori returns to training while still injured and while Yanna remains missing to him. In the later imperial period the yard and surrounding grounds support much larger forces. The changing scale reflects Khar’Rukan's growth rather than a change into a different place with the same name.[5][6]
The yard's name identifies an imperial training location. It does not denote the Thirteen Chambers, nor the independent tournament ground through which the Callings take people off Murder Island.[7][1]
