Mero is a fictional child in Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha and a friend of Khalembo. The narrative identifies Mero as a girl with a crooked braid. The children belong to families of grass workers from Tollen Ford.[1]

Friendship with Khalembo

Tavi and Mero give Khalembo companions outside the ruling household. Mero teaches him to use a harvesting scythe, connecting his later weapon to ordinary work and personal friendship as well as combat. Their time together precedes the family's disastrous encounter with the god Terra.[1]

Death and remembrance

Both children die in the devastation associated with Terra's power. Their deaths are separate from the injuries survived by Eshari and the adult fighters. Polezah's medical work helps living members of the family recover but does not restore these two children.[1]

Khalembo later incorporates their skulls into the scythe by which he remembers them. The objects therefore have individual identities and a history of friendship; they are not simply anonymous trophies from enemies defeated in battle.[1]
