Reth Vaun is a fictional antagonist in Eshari: Daughter of the Dark Alpha. An older Chamber survivor, he waits for other fighters to kill and absorb power before attacking them. His confrontation with Eshari's family occurs during the search for Yanna near Split-Tooth Wells.[1]

Appearance and plan

Reth is tall and narrow, with gray hair braided down his back. Red thread closes his left eye; the visible right eye is pale brown. He carries a black spear whose movement and attraction of Ka’ru exceed ordinary weapon handling.[1]

He allows Selka Nine-Cuts, Vhorin and Oth Marr to fight Makhera, Knargz and Zuberi first. When the three attackers die, their power enters the exhausted victors. Reth then appears and draws those newly enlarged currents toward his spear. He has used the earlier combatants as part of a predatory plan rather than treating their deaths as a reason to grieve.[1]

Battle with the family

Reth rapidly defeats the younger fighters' attempts to stop him. The arrival of the Dark One and Utrea brings the older survivors together. They coordinate through patterns learned in the same earlier ordeal, while Eshari continues watching for an opening.[1]

Reth recovers from extreme injuries, but that ability has limits. Eshari tears away the thread over his hidden black eye. Zuberi strikes through it, Knargz drives the broken spear point upward and Makhera withdraws her blade as the parents release their hold. The combined attack kills him.[1]

Aftermath

Reth's released Ka’ru is described as larger than that of the other three attackers together. Makhera steps into its path and receives it. Nebu then appears, heals the living and temporarily reanimates the dead attackers before ending their renewed lives. Reth is not left alive as a continuing ally or rescued family member.[1]
