Makhera

Makhera, known as the Bannerless Blade, is a fictional warrior in the Tribal Universe. She is Yanna's biological mother and one of the eight survivors associated with the founding rulers' passage through the Thirteen Chambers. She chooses an independent life rather than a throne or permanent army, while retaining personal bonds with the people who become the Ka’Rukan Empire's rulers.

Identity and fighting style

Makhera carries two short swords and fights with compressed Ka’ru, close control and crossed-wrist movements. Yanna's similar motion causes the older founders to recognize a connection before the younger characters understand it. Their eventual meeting gives that resemblance a personal explanation, rather than making it proof that everyone who uses paired blades belongs to the same bloodline.

She describes eight children walking out of the Chambers and six holding together afterward. She is one of the two who take different roads; Seyra Vhal is later identified as the other. “Bannerless Blade” refers to Makhera, not to Nim’Raza's position as the sixth ruler.

Yanna and Sakori

Makhera meets Yanna and Sakori on their wilderness journey. She acknowledges giving birth to Yanna and leaving her, while crediting the people who stayed with the larger work of raising her. She does not claim that biology entitles her to replace Havarek or Utrea. Yanna confronts the abandonment directly, and Makhera admits that she has not earned an uncomplicated maternal claim.

She recognizes their Blood-Law marriage through the scars on their palms and identifies her old companions' influence in Yanna's weapons and training. Her connection with the founders predates the empire, but she has chosen to avoid the territorial conquest and mass obedience they seek.

Search after the causeway

After Yanna disappears, Makhera searches independently and later reunites with Knargz and Zuberi at the Split-Tooth Wells. A piece of Yanna's armor provides evidence of a possible trail without proving where she has gone. Makhera, Eshari and the others follow it into an ambush involving other Chamber survivors.

The battle tests the older survivors as well as Eshari. Makhera takes part in defeating Reth Vaun, and the subsequent appearance of Nebu exposes the difference between their acquired power and a god's ability to manipulate the entire encounter. His contradictory remarks about Yanna do not amount to a verified death report.

Eshari ultimately brings Yanna back alive. Makhera's later reunion with her combines affection with anger that she vanished. The recovery resolves Yanna's missing status for the reader, even though Sakori has already left the island without knowing she survived.

Later alliances

Makhera receives the family at her home and joins a campaign against the Khar’Voth alongside the Dark One, Knargz, Zuberi and Seyra. Their behavior shows old familiarity that does not require all five to serve the same government. At Nebu's Calling she guards the wounded winners and remains beside Yanna as Eshari transfers the crown and leaves.

Her last confirmed position is with the people staying on Murder Island to settle the empire's affairs. The supplied books do not establish an exact age, surname, current spouse or the identity of Yanna's biological father.
